7 Tell-Tale Signs You Need to Replace Your Air Conditioner
Like any appliance, an air conditioner won't last forever. Here's how to tell whether it's time to repair or replace.
A well-maintained air conditioner will run for years, but even a well-maintained unit runs into problems eventually. Here are seven signs it might be time to replace rather than repair.
1. Inconsistent hot or cold air
If your unit stops producing cool air entirely, it may mean low refrigerant, or in more serious cases, a damaged compressor. Cold zones in some rooms and none in others can also signal the unit is on its way out.
2. Diminished air flow
Little or no cool air from the vents, even with the thermostat set reasonably, often points to a compressor nearing the end of its life. Check filters first, but it may be time for a new unit.
3. Strange noises or smells
A healthy system runs almost silently. Screeching, grinding, grating or buzzing can indicate a serious problem. Bad odours can mean damaged insulation or mouldy ductwork circulating contaminated air through your home.
4. Leaking or excess moisture
Some condensation outside the unit is normal, but moisture inside the house or a sudden leak needs a professional inspection straight away, particularly since electrical components and water don't mix.
5. Short cycling
If your unit is switching on and off more frequently than usual, it's under extra stress and may fail entirely if not addressed. Sometimes it's a blown fuse; sometimes it's a sign the unit needs replacing.
6. Energy bills spiking
A sudden, unexplained rise in your power bill, once you've ruled out other causes, often means the unit is working harder than it should to deliver the same result.
7. Frequent repairs, out of warranty
One major repair over a unit's life is normal. Repeated repairs, especially once the warranty has expired, are usually a sign it's more economical to replace than keep patching.
