Not cooling, not heating, or won't turn on at all? Start with a few safe checks before deciding what to do next.

Safe Checks to Try First
These are simple checks any homeowner can do safely. If they don’t fix it, a qualified technician can assess what’s actually wrong rather than guessing.
Won't Turn On at All
- Check the remote has working batteries
- Confirm the unit is switched on at the wall and the isolator switch
- Check whether the circuit breaker has tripped
Running, but Not Cooling
- Check the thermostat is actually set to cool, not fan or heat
- Check filters aren't visibly blocked with dust or debris
- Check the outdoor unit isn't obstructed by leaves, furniture or plants
Not Heating
- Check the mode is set to heat, not cool
- Some systems have a short delay when switching modes, wait a few minutes after restarting
- Check the outdoor unit isn't obstructed
Weak Airflow
- Check filters aren't clogged, a blocked filter is the most common cause
- Check vents aren't blocked by furniture or curtains
Strange Noise
- Note what the noise sounds like (rattling, grinding, buzzing) for the technician
- Turn the system off if the noise is loud or sudden rather than continuing to run it
Fault or Error Code
- Note the exact code shown on the controller
- Don't keep resetting and restarting repeatedly, that can mask what's actually wrong

Why is my air conditioner not turning on?
Most often it's a simple cause: flat remote batteries, the unit switched off at an isolator, or a tripped circuit breaker. If none of those fix it, the fault is likely electrical or mechanical and needs a technician.
Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling?
A blocked filter or obstructed outdoor unit are the most common causes and are worth checking first. If airflow and clearance both look fine, it could be a refrigerant issue, which needs a licensed technician, refrigerant should never be handled yourself.
Why is my air conditioner blowing warm air on cool mode?
