Air Conditioner Tips During Sydney's Hot Summers
Stay cool without an enormous power bill. Five practical tips for getting through a Sydney summer.
1. Keep the temperature at 25°C during the day
25°C is cool enough to stay comfortable without drawing excessive power. When you're home during the day, we recommend keeping your thermostat no lower than this.
2. Turn it down at night for better sleep
Research suggests 15.6-19.4°C is ideal for sleep quality. In practice, most people find 20-22°C comfortable, paired with a fan to help you feel cooler still.
3. Turn it up when you're not home
If you're out for 8-10 hours, there's no reason to run the air con at full power. Turning the thermostat up by 5-6 degrees while you're away, then back down when you return, saves meaningful energy. A programmable thermostat can automate this.
4. Use fans alongside your air con
Fans don't cool the air, but moving air over your skin makes you feel more comfortable, letting you run the air con less.
5. Check for drafts
Drafts around windows, doors and other openings cause air leakage that decreases efficiency and increases your power bill. Sealing them is a simple, effective fix.
